People are always asking us why we chose to raise ducks instead of chickens like “normal” people. Well, one of the reasons is that ducks just have a lot more personality than we’ve found chickens to have so we’d like to share a bit of that with you here.

When setting out to pick which breeds of duck (and goose) we wanted to raise, there were many factors to be weighed. Egg production was a key factor, but the breed’s temperament and looks also came into play when it came time to make the decision.

We have truly enjoyed all of the time we’ve spent with our flock and now we are thrilled to introduce you to them!

Hazel

Welsh Harlequin

Date of Hatch: June 6, 2018

Hazel stole our hearts from the very beginning! Hazel and her sister Violet were the best of pals, always off on an adventure together. Hazel is an excellent earthworm hunter but her absolute favorite treat is kale!

Charlie

White Layer

Date of Hatch: June 6, 2018

Charlie is a spunky gal, named after the main character Charlie from the movie ‘The Mighty Ducks’. Charlie is easy to pick out from a crowd with her unique sounding quack. Charlie keeps her white feathers remarkably clean, even while playing around and splashing in the mud. Charlie is one of our best egg layers! Charlie’s favorite treat is soldier fly larva.

Cali

Rouen

Date of Hatch: June 6, 2018

Cali is the leader of the ducks! Named after her birth state of California, Cali is the first to do anything – first to jump in the pool and first to bust out of the run for adventures in the yard. Cali is bold and knows exactly what she wants and how to get it!

Blanche

Golden 300 Layer

Date of Hatch: June 6, 2018

Since Blanche is a Golden 300 Layer, we felt it appropriate to name her after the Golden Girls! Blanche is very outgoing with a big voice – always let’s you know what’s going on! Blanche is one of the first to greet us when we enter the run. Blanche is also a sensitive girl and misses splashing around in the pool with her sister Sophia (also named after the Golden Girls!). Blanche’s favorite treat is meal worms.

Charlotte

Buff Goose

Charlotte is the matriarch of the flock. Charlotte dutifully watches over the ducks and keeps an eye to the sky for predators. With her large wings spread out wide, she let’s the ducks know it’s time to head back inside the run. Charlotte is also the homestead project supervisor, overseeing any outdoor projects and ensuring the quality of work meets the highest of standards. Charlotte’s favorite treats are dill and oats.
